Reg It is no secret that reviews in the 'extreme metal' world are almost invariably a mere enumeration of motif-epithets -- dark! frightening! ponnnnderous! -- and I confidently presume that this album will not escape this fate -- but if there were one point to stress, it would be that while many 'extreme' bands attempt to 'attack' with their 'brutality' -- indeed! to smash a face with a hammer! -- (and let's disregard the perennial inundation of poor attempts to do so) this, perhaps paradoxically, is a very welcoming album -- yes! for it is already there! and it will sing without you! but it opens up and tacitly invites you to enter; and if you 'dare' to do so, it shall with great warmth wrap you up inside -- for this is a sound; no mere 'punishing assault.'
It is like wrapping up in a comfy blanket and dropping out of life, with no need for that bong.

Dumbsaint The sound of mayhem. A cloud of fog that I hope never lifts.

Ave Acer Mors Impetuous Ritual are pushing the boundaries of death metal in this stellar release. Blight...is the stuff of nightmares, a cacophonous frenzy straight from the deepest recesses of mankind's fears. There are no gimmicks or tricks on this album; instead one finds a most careful attention to tone, texture, and songwriting, resulting in music that feels singular despite its frequent movements from harrowing brutality to eerie ambience. Listen to this shit with headphones on as loud as you can. Favorite track: Synchronous Convergence.

twistedsonofwatson Impetuous Ritual keep pushing death metal into unchartered realms of horror and brutality. An epic release at an important time in history as we find ourselves in political chaos across the globe and an ever present feeling of dread at the outcomes of those who are making decisions for the future of earth and its inhabitants - a soundtrack for these dark times. Enter the void, there are no answers or questions here, just swirling outré statements set to a blistering cacophony of sound. And it must be said that only musicians of the highest calibre could create art such as this.

themetatronicconspirator I love the subterranean sound Impetuous Ritual creates. I love the little moments where bells and other effects are added. This band is the sound of Weird Tales if you could turn literary works into music. Every time I listen to these guys I feel like reading the works of Lovecraft, August Derelith, Clark Ashton Smith, Robert W. Chambers, or Brian Lumley. Nothing has really changed between this album and past albums. You still get the same claustrophobic low tuned guitars and bass.

about

Australia’s IMPETUOUS RITUAL follow up their last album “Unholy Congregation Of Hypocritical Ambivalence” and their debut “Relentless Execution Of Ceremonial Excrescence” LP with their new musical abomination of ambient death metal surrealism “Blight Upon Martyred Sentience” which takes their unhinged vortex-like death metal chaos into much more abstract, cavernous, and otherworldly realms.

With a sound even less conventional and even weirder and alien than its two predecessors, “Blight…” harnesses a much darker atmosphere (if one could even imagine that would be possible), sometimes veering off into abstract noise and dark ambient, creating a much more depraved, violent, torturous and malevolent audial canvas like no other band in extreme death metal today. One could say that with the even stranger and warped sound picture that IMPETUOUS RITUAL have painted with “Blight…”, that the band have transcended and inverted the genre of death metal unto something of their own vision unparalleled.
